The Top 10 Louisiana School Districts
Louisiana has struggled throughout history to create a public school system that fairly and completely serves the residents of the state. Since Katrina, an influx of new educational experimentation has began in New Orleans and has spread to different areas of the state. This ushered in a wave of charter schools that are beginning to make an impact on the overall school landscape.
There are a lot of different ways you could create this list. We decided to focus not just on which districts had the highest averages overall, but also which areas had the highest number of “A” rated schools over all. We only used schools districts with 7 or more schools. This also helped to lessen the effect of the smaller districts that are housed within large population areas. Our calculation was created by weighing the state district score 75%, and the percentage of schools with an “A” rating as 25%.
1) St. Charles Parish Schools: 107
A district that includes Luling and Destrehan, 73% of St. Charles Parish schools earned an "A" rating and no schools in the district earned below a "B", making it the highest ranking district in our analysis.
2) Zachary Community Schools district rating: 106.5
A community north of Baton Rouge, this has been the highest ranking school district in the state for the past 10 years. It came in at #2 in our survey, though, because when factored in with all of the schools in the greater Baton Rouge area, only 22% of schools in the area earned an "A" rating.
3) Vernon Parish School District: 105.23
This small town offers one of the highest ranking high schools in the state, with a state score of 110.4 as well as having 66% of schools with an overall "A" rating.
4) Ascension Parish School District: 104.65
The overall district rating for Ascension Parish, where Geismar is located, is 121.2, with 55% of schools earning an “A” rating.
5) St. Tammany Parish School District: 103.1
The overall district rating for St. Tammany Parish, where Mandeville and Covington are located, is located is 122.8, and 44% of schools in the district earned an "A" rating
6) Plaquemines Parish District Rating: 103
Schools in this district were given a score of 123 by the state and 43% of the schools earned an "A" rating.
7) Orleans Parish School District: 102.225
8) Livingston Parish School District: 99.05
Located in the Livingston Parish school district, which earned a state ranking of 117.4 and is home to 19 schools with an “A” rating.
9) Allen Parish School District: 97
A small district north of Lake Charles, 45% of the schools here earned an "A" rating from the state.
10) St. Bernard Parish School District: 93.1
